maverick.

Tomorrow (unofficially) begins my academic life in University of Glasgow. Arriving yesterday at the Glasgow Central Station with two heavy suitcases, a duffle bag, a backpack, and a more fashionable fanny pack, felt so surreal. Reminded me a lot of the first time I jetted off alone and unpacked into just another dormitory. Though, Glasgow has been really different from my expectations. Sure, some say Glasgow is the most dangerous area you can find in Scotland or even the UK, but have they not seen the history behind the buildings? Of course I have my guards high up walking back alone at night, but isn’t it the same anywhere in the world? Even in Singapore. I am not sure, maybe this thought will change in the near future when it gets moreĀ dangerous. Nothing tops Paris thus far.

Which brings me to a quick 3 days in Paris right before I arrived in London. Perhaps I have deliberately shut off that side of Paris in my memories, but I saw a much dirtier, messier, unromantic Paris as compared to 7/8 years ago. I was looking forward to finally getting back to Paris again this time but that initial magical and stirring feeling is gone. I can’t find a good feeling to allude to since I suppose I do not have enough emotional experiences.

This time, I fell hard in love with Geneva. Although similar to Paris (it is French speaking), it feels right. It has the mountains like Vancouver and the waters (but not as disgusting) like Singapore. The people there were amazing, friendly, and helpful. A stark contrast against the German speaking Zermatt (yes even Zermatt), Basel, Zurich. Bern was slightly better, I suppose it is because they are the capital hence they had to maintain a certain level of class. Oh well, I can only speak from an Asian point of view. I am sure if I were of a different skin colour, I would have been treated a lot better (or in another case, possibly a lot worse). I am not complaining.

I found it most difficult to fall in love with Germany. Or rather, Germans. Sure I loved their produce, the freshness and at such reasonable (read: cheap) prices! But the peopleā€¦ German is known to be a straightforward language. Yet my experience with Germans (who are not already my friends) was terrible and bordering rude. Perhaps this is why their economy is rock solid - they get shit done instead of romancing you.

Enough about who I love and who I have a distaste for. I’m looking forward to a good 4 (hopefully not so wet, fingers crossed) months ahead with the city.
